Introduction

The United Kingdom Association for Psychotherapeutic Counselling was established in February 1999 to provide a professional association specifically to promote and extend the practice and development of therapeutic counselling and regulate it for the benefit of the general public.

Regulation is achieved by accrediting as Member Organisations only those organisations that meet the rigorous standards required by UKAPC in the following areas:

  • Training Standards

  • Standards of Ethical and Professional Practice

  • Continued Professional Development

  • Equal Opportunities

  • Research

The National Register of Psychotherapeutic Counsellors, Supervisors and Trainers provides the general public with a list of practitioners who are trained to high levels of professional and ethical competence.  Any practitioner who is found to fall short of the required standards risks losing their registration or having their registration suspended or made conditional upon specific and written requirements designed to re-establish competency.

Equal Opportunities Policy

The United Kingdom Association for Psychotherapeutic Counselling recognises and values diversity and difference and is actively working to ensure that its work is non-discriminatory in nature.

UKAPC recognises that it exists in a community rich in diversity and difference and that direct and indirect discrimination against these differences exists in society and adversely affects individuals and groups.  UKAPC therefore accepts an obligation to ensure that its own services, and those of its Full and Institutional Member Organisations, do not exclude or discriminate against individuals or groups on criteria other than suitability.

Policy Statement

UKAPC is committed to pursue a positive strategy that goes beyond an undertaking not to discriminate or oppress.  UKAPC recognises its sphere of influence and seeks to offer positive contribution to the debate on therapy and equality.

UKAPC is opposed to any display or prejudice, either by word or conduct, by any of its offers or elected representatives.

UKAPC seeks to develop its research role and encourage a greater awareness and knowledge of equal opportunities issues and specifically of anti-oppressive practice in therapeutic counselling.
